Amsterdam in a Jiffy.
Amsterdam is one of the greatest and most convenient cities in the world - you probably already know that. But what if you only had 24-ish hours to explore this city? I was recently sent on a business trip to our headquarters in the Netherlands and had slightly more than a day to “tour” the city so I really wanted to put my time to good use. For Amsterdam “virgins”, I believe there are a ton of tourist resources online but if you're into something more off-the-beaten-track then keep on reading...
0730 hrs: Check-in to Hotel NH Amsterdam Centre
I was lucky enough to stay here during my short trip because the location couldn't get any better - it was a stone's throw away from Leidseplein (literally, the Apple Store was 3 minutes by foot!) Perhaps because I was a “corporate” guest, they accepted my early check-in and had a room ready immediately, but you can always drop your bags at the lobby and continue your day. For someone who has a sweet tooth like me, I was more than happy to see a good selection of fruit, juices and cereal at breakfast. Special shoutout to the NH staff who were extremely hospitable and helpful, I'd definitely come back for a stay in the future.
0830 hrs: Coffee run at Bocca Coffee
First order of the day, even before breakfast, was coffee. I've read and heard great things about Bocca Coffee but never had the pleasure of visiting. I'm glad I made a pilgrimage because this place probably serves the best coffee in Amsterdam, I mean, they do supply beans to several coffee bars across the city afterall. My hotter-than-espresso barista, Mac, told me that their La Marzocco Strada was “on a break” and asked me to hang around while they sorted it out. I found a spot in front of the giant sardine can bookshelf and enjoyed a few moments of free wifi before he brought me an Ethiopian flat white. Did I mention it was on the house (he insisted ok!)
0930 hrs: Stroll along the canals or shop at Primark Damrak
Since I still had some time before my brunch place opened, I decided to make my way to the Primark store on Damrak. Shopping in the morning is the best, there were probably fewer than 20 people in the store and those who have experienced the madness at Oxford Circus or Tottenham Court Road will know that this was a rare sight! I wanted to check if I could find any pieces for my upcoming trip to Cuba and I was not disappointed, I found three items. Come to think of it, I have never left a Primark store empty-handed. Of course, there is always the option of taking a short walk along the canals near De Wallen (red light district.) Everything will seem very different in the light of day!
1100 hrs: Brunch at Cut Throat Barber & Coffee
Just across the street was Cut Throat Barber & Coffee, a barber shop that doubles up as a cafe/bar. I found them on Instagram and was really intrigued, it kinda reminds me of Ludlow Coffee & Barber in New York's East Village. Alas, I didn't manage to get a high fade alongside my huevos rancheros but the bartender did make a mean glass of gin cocktail. The cafe side is pretty small so come early if you want to snag the good seats. Guys, if you're looking to get a nice haircut by hipsters for €35~, call to make an appointment. As far as I know, they do not serve ladies in the barber shop (I know, is it sexist?)
1230 hrs: Museum and more museums
There was no way that I'd skip visiting at least one museum because there were just too many to choose from. Since I wasn't really into the works of Vincent or Rembrandt, I opted for something lighter. I spent a couple hours in both the Stedelijk and the MOCO. Plus, they were just beside each other so I definitely saved time on traveling. Stedelijk had contemporary art (including installation) and reminded me of Paris's Centre Pompidou. The MOCO, on the other hand, showcased “rock stars” of art (as quoted by the museum.) From now till Halloween, the house is shared by Banksy and Salvador Dali both of which need no introduction, so if you're scheduled to visit Amsterdam, I'd highly recommend it.
1800 hrs: Makan time!
After all the walking and standing, it was only right to reward myself with some food. I took a short walk to the Albert Cuyp Market, probably the most touristy thing I did that day, and bought a piping hot stroopwafel for €2.50 from Original Stroopwafels, look for the handsome owner. One other treat was the beef burger I got at The Butcher just a few steps away (comes with awesome sweet potato fries!) I heard there's a “secret kitchen” at the back but I didn't explore, maybe next time?
2000 hrs: Happy hour (optional)
Well, first-timers to Amsterdam should expect a constant whiff of Cannabis while strolling around the canals. Personally, I had a bad experience with the brownies so weed was out for me. I was, however, on a hunt for a nice bar to get myself happy so I did a little hopping around the area. I'll let you do the Googling because to each his own, right? All I'll say is, the city provides an inclusive nightlife and there is a theme for everyone! :p
0130 hrs: Supper at Wok to Walk
The best way to sober up after all that alcohol was greasy Chinese food and there was no other place besides Wok to Walk. This place has been my favorite go-to for late night suppers since my flying days and I'm sure my SQ crew friends still frequent this shop along Leidsestraat. It was located along my way back to the hotel so I had to stop by for a box of spicy noodles.
0800 hrs: Regretting the night and breakfast
As I had a meeting at the HQ in the morning, I was forced to haul myself out of bed with much difficulty. I did a quick round of breakfast at the lobby lounge and stopped by Lot Sixty One for a strong cup of joe before heading to the office. Worthy of my mention was their banana bread which was extremely moist! I would've stayed longer had it not been for work, the weather was just too perfect.
So there you have it, one full day of things to do in Amsterdam and none of that mainstream bullsh*t. Now, let's start packing for Paris and Havana!
